BEAD JAMMING OR CRIMPING APPARATUS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A machine (10) for crimping tire bead rings (28,281) in which an inner die member (24,56) has grooves (34,62) for holding the bead rings (28,28') in the area of the bead splices and an upper die member (30,54) engages the outer surface of the bead rings (28) in that area. The die members (24,30) are compressed with sufficient force for a sufficient period of time so that the strands (46,46') of the bead rings (28,28') are held together by the insulating material around the strands (46,46') in the area of the bead splices. The side portions (40,44,58) of the grooves (34,36,62) control the spreading of the bead rings (28,28') and may be flared to compress and then release the bead rings (28,28'). The grooves (62) of the inner die member (24') may have movable inserts (64) for ejecting the bead rings (28'). The upper die member (30) may also include grooves (36) in mating engagement with the grooves (34) of the inner die member (24) for enclosing the outer portions of the bead rings (28) at the splice area and provide for release of the bead rings (28) after crimping.
