The invention provides exemplary systems (36) and methods for processing solid supports (14, 34). According to one system, a probe (16, 24, 66) is provided having a distal end (18, 26) and a lumen terminating at the distal end (18, 26). The transport mechanism is adapted to place the distal end (18, 26) of the probe (16, 24, 66) into a well (10, 118) having a plurality of solid supports (14, 34) that are held wihtin a fluid. A detection mechanism (20, 22, 28, 30) is provided to detect the presence or absence of one of the solid supports (14, 34) at the distal end (18, 26) while the distal end (18, 26) is within the fluid. A measuring system (28, 30, 100, 102) is provided to measure the general size of the attached solid support (18, 26).
