Abstract of the Disclosure A hand-held information read out device for use with the bar code symbols to be found on retail products such as clothing items is disclosed. In conventional hand-held devices of this type the user has to be very care- ful to move the device correctly over the coded symbols. This problem is alleviated in the present invention due to the fact that the scanning laser beam scans at least two areas of the bar code symbol or scans it in at least two directions.
