A bedding system has a multiple piece mattress supported by a frame. The mattress includes upper and lower sets of bendable slats separated by compressible material. The frame has a side edge frame part topped by an inwardly extending ledge which borders a large center open region of the frame. The ledge provides a peripheral seat for the mattress in which the upper set of slats are deflectable downwardly at the bottom set of slats and the bottom set of slates are deflectable downwardly into the open region of the frame when the mattress is under load.
