The Bed/desk is a versatile unit to help create more efficient living space. It is designed to utilize the floor space under the bed for desk storage while sleeping and then having the bed fold up creating a spacious work area. The unit can be made of wood, woodlaminates, metal, virgin or recycled plastics, or a combination of these. The headboard is U shaped coming across the head of the bed around the sides about a quarter of the way along each side of the bed board, giving the unit more stability in the raised position. The bed board has vertical pivots allowing it tip up against the headboard. The pivots are located so as to allow the bed enough clearance from the floor to allow space for a computer and monitor, have approximately a quarter of the bed board and mattress for counter balance and have it not quite hit the floor in the tipped up position. There will be a channel through the headboard to allow computer cables to pass safely through it. The bed board has more pivots on each side on the same plane as the main pivots to allow the addition of the desk and shelf units. The desk unit is mounted to allow it to support the bed board in the lowered position and be at a comfortable working height when tipped up. The shelf units will be positioned so as to support the bed board when lowered and still clear the desk while being raised The bed board itself has a small headboard to stop the mattress from sliding off the end when raising and lowering, tipped slightly towards the mattress at the top/front to hold it firmly against the bed board in the raised position The desk and shelf units are tied together near the bottom with a "parallel linkage" so they remain level with the floor while the bed is being raised and lowered and not disturb the computer equipment on the desk or anything on the shelf units. These units can be sold as fully assembled and finished, as a "built in" unit at college or university dormatories or as a "knock down" style for purchaser assembly to make it more economical. The single model should raise and lower with a reasonable load on it without any external assistance but the double; queen and king sizes will likely require external assistance such as a "gas cylinder" or some other device.
