The foundation includes a pair of parallel stringers at each of its sides and a pair of parallel crosspieces at each of its ends. A number of slats for supporting a mattress are arranged parallel to the crosspieces. The slats are supported by the stringers and are arranged side by side one another along the length of the stringers. The slats are also arranged in three groups, two outer groups and a single central group. Each outer group commences at a separate crosspiece, extends toward the other outer group and terminates at the central group which lies between the outer two groups. The slats in the central group are spaced closer together than those in the two outer groups.
