2103814 9312752 PCTABS00024 A hospital bed (10) has an articulated patient support surface (24) with four air outlet housings (26, 27, 28, 29) mounted thereon at spaced locations. An air supply arrangement (43) supplies temperature-controlled air to an air outlet opening in each of the housings (26, 27, 28, 29). Associated with each housing (26, 27, 28, 29), is an elongate tubular fabric diffusion member (42) having an O-ring (63) which encircles one end (62) thereof and is removably received in a circumferential groove (77) in the air outlet opening. Each diffusion member (42) can be tucked completely into its housing (26, 27, 28, 29) when not in use. Each housing (26, 27, 28, 29) has a cap (92) movable between open and closed positions with respect to the air outlet opening, and an arrangement yieldably urging the cap (92) toward its closed position. A valve arrangement (161) is provided below two of the housings (26, 27) in order to automatically discharge fluids which happen to enter the air supply system (43) through the air outlet openings. In a variation, two of the elongate diffusion members (42) can be replaced with an inflatable underlay (212) or overlay (220) having two inlet sleeves (218, 219) with O-rings (221) which are each releasably coupled to a respective one of the air devices.
