An adjustable bed includes a hospital bed frame chassis (7, 8), an articulatable, multi- sectioned base platform (90) mounted on the chassis (7, 8), an adjustable patient support framework (95) mounted on the base platform (90), and a patient support surface (36) overlying the adjustable patient support framework (95) and base platform (90). Modulation of the patient support surface (36) is accomplished through two distinct mechanisms - articulation of various sections of the base platform (90) and movement of the various peripheral support vertices (70, 71, 72, 73) and/or segments (103a, 103b) of the adjustable patient support framework (95).
