A bellows element (11, 22) having screw threads (25, 28) for joining the elements in plurality to form a bellows (30) is disclosed which takes advantage of the deflection space allowed for movement of the rubber convolutions to accommodate the screw threads thus preserving a minimum bellows length. The rubber convolutions are restricted to predetermined shear displacement which allows the analytical determination of forces acting on the threaded joint thus allowing the calculation of suitable joint dimensions.
