A method of making a decorative stone belt buckle including the steps of selecting a stone for use in the belt buckle, and selecting a buckle base having a stone attachment surface. Then the stone is cut around a perimeter to form a slug having an outer face and an underside, with the perimeter being sized and shaped to register with the buckle base. Then, a wafer is cut from the stone slug wherein the underside of the wafer matches the attachment surface and the outer face is also a cut face. Then, the outer or presentation surface is polished and the wafer is secured to the buckle base. The wafer may also be a compound stone wafer with inlays or sections of different stone or decorative materials.
