The end cap of an idler roller is provided with an inwardly projecting support (39, 41, 42-43, 46, 47) which is dimensioned to permit, during the assembly of the idler a downward movement of a shell of the roller but captures the shaft thereof in alignment with a passage for the shaft through the cap. Several embodiments are disclosed, inclusive a reinforcement of the cap by filling voids in at least one face of the cap with a reinforcing plastic material, where the cap is moulded from a plastic material. The invention facilitates the assembly of the roller and enables a substantial degree of automation of the assembly.
