A belt fastener has an upper date and a lower plate spaced apart to receive a belt end, and a pair of staples preassembled to the upper plate for attaching the fastener to a belt end. The fastener has recessed pockets in the upper plate, each having a bottom recessed wall portion within opposite ends of the recessed pocket. Apertures are formed in the pocket bottom recessed wall portion for receiving legs of the staples, the staples each having a pair of such legs and a bight section interconnecting the legs. with the bight section having curved portions at the juncture between it and the legs. Vertically spaced upper and lower interference fits between the staple legs and the upper plate hold the staple legs in an upright pre-set position relative to the upper plate. The upper interference fit comprises edges of the upper plate at the recessed pocket engaging outer sides of the staple legs at first areas above the bottom wall portions in the recessed pocket. The lower interference fit comprises edges of the bottom wall portions in the recessed pocket engaging the staple legs at second areas vertically spaced from the first areas. The recessed pockets are located adjacent an outboard end of the upper plate and the staple legs are aligned widthwise adjacent the outboard end of the upper plate.
