ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus in which lateral movement of a moving belt is controlled so that the belt moves in a predetermined path. The apparatus includes at least one rotatably mounted roller comprising a flexible outer sleeve having at least one spiral slot extending around the periphery thereof. The sleeve has a plurality of spaced grooves extending in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roller. In this way, the flexible outer sleeve is divided into segments with each segment being decoupled from one another. Preventing the belt from deviating laterally from the pre-determined path deflects the segments supporting the belt. The deflected segments return to the undeflected condition when not supporting the belt insuring that the maximum force applied on the belt never exceeds the minimum force required to buckle the belt. A roller of this type prevents the formation of a pattern of permanent corrugations in the belt.
