A belt tensioner arranged so that a turnable tension pulley is allowed to oscillate at a fulcrum of a position eccentric from the center of rotation thereof, wherein tension control means for oscillating the tension pulley so as to keep tension of a belt constant and damper means for damping vibrations and shocks transmitted from the belt are provided individually at the side of the tension pulley. The tension control means and the damper means may be disposed so that they fit within the overall size of the tension pulley on the side of the tension pulley by disposing them side by side so as to adjoin on the same plane.
