A tensioner (22-22B) comprising a mechanical spring (3-3B) operatively associated with a support (1) and a belt engaging member (6-6B) for urging the belt engaging member relative to the support and against the belt with a force to tension the belt. The belt engaging member has a portion (71) thereof being rotatably carried by the shaft (41-41B) so as to rotate relative to the shaft, a dampening device (40-40B) has a pair of frictionally engaging first and second surfaces (31, 33). The mechanical spring (3-3B) provides the force for urging the belt engaging member (6-6B) relative to the support (1) and against the belt to tension the belt and further provides a certain force for urging the first surface (31) against the second surface (33) to dampen the movement of the belt engaging member (6-6B).
