The invention relates to compounds of the formula (I) Image ( I ) where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are, independently of one another, hydrogen, CF3, NO2, CN, halogen, -S(NSO2CF3)CF3, (C1-C4)- alkyl, phenyl, SO2R5, COOR5, NR25, where R5 is (C1-C4)- alkyl, which can also be fluorinated, or phenyl, or R1 and R2, R2 and R3 or R3 and R4 together form an aliphatic or aromatic ring which can also contain an oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atom. The invention further provides a process for preparing the compounds of the formula (I), which comprises react- ing compounds of the formula (II) Image ( I I ) where R1 to R4 are as defined above and X is hydrogen or an alkali metal, with elemental fluorine in the presence of an inert solvent and, if desired, an alkali metal fluoride at low temperatures. The invention further provides for the use of the com- pounds of the formula (I) for the fluorination of com- pounds having carbanion character.
