ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of enhancing the removal of a benzene from a petroleum refinery desalter effluent brine is described. The method involves treating the effluent brine with a combination of aluminum chlorhydrate and a water soluble cationic polymer followed by solvent extraction. The preferred cationic polymer is polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride.
