A benzimidazole compound or a salt thereof which has an inhibitory action of forming of macrophages and is useful as an active ingredient of an orally available medicament for preventive and/or therapeutic treatment of arteriosclerosis, which is represented by the formula (I): Image wherein, R1 represents one or more functional groups on the benzene ring selected from the group consisting of hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group and a lower alkoxy group; R2 represents hydrogen atom, an alkyl group or an acyl group; L represents a C4-C8 alkylene group or an ethyleneoxy linking group represented as (CH2CH2O)n CH2CH2 wherein n represents 1 or 2; X represents O or NH; Y represents S or a single bond; and Q represents a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic group which may have a functional group on the ring.

L'invention concerne des composés de benzimidazole ou certains de leurs sels, qui présentent une activité inhibitrice contre la conversion de macrophages en cellules spumeuses et qui sont utiles en tant qu'ingrédients actifs d'agents préventifs et thérapeutiques de l'artériosclérose ou de l'hyperlipidémie, pouvant être administrés par voie orale. Ces composés ou sels sont représentés dans la formule générale (I) ci-dessous, dans laquelle R<1> est un ou plusieurs substituants sur le noyau benzénique, sélectionnés dans un groupe constitué d'hydrogène, d'halogéno, d'alkyle inférieur et d'alkoxy inférieur; R<2> est hydrogène, alkyle ou acyle; L est alkylène C4-C8 ou un groupe de liaison éthylène-oxy représenté par la formule générale: (CH2CH2O) nCH2 CH2 (dans laquelle n est 1 ou 2); X est O ou NH; Y est S ou une liaison unique; et Q est un groupe hétérocyclique à cinq ou six éléments, susceptible d'avoir un substituant sur le noyau.
