A benzimidazole compound or a salt thereof which has an inhibitory action of forming of macrophages and is useful as an active ingredient of a medicament for preventive and/or therapeutic treatment of arteriosclerosis, which is represented by the formula (I): (see formula I) wherein R1 represents hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a lower alkyl group, or a lower alkoxy group; R2 represents hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, or an acyl group; R3 represents a functional group on the ring; A represents O or CH2, or CH that forms a double bond with an adjacent carbon atom; L represents a C4-C8 alkylene group or an ethyleneoxy linking group represented by (CH2CH2O)n CH2CH2 wherein n represents 1 or 2; X represents O, S or methylene group; and m represents 0 or 1.

L'invention concerne des composés de benzimidazole correspondant à la formule générale (I) ou leurs sels, présentant des activités inhibitrices contre la transformation des macrophages en cellules mousse, utiles en tant que principe actif de médicaments destinés à la prévention et/ou au traitement de l'artériosclérose. Dans la formule (I), R<1> représente un groupe hydrogène, halogéno, alkyle inférieur ou alkoxy inférieur; R<2> représente un groupe hydrogène, alkyle ou acyle; R<3> est un substituant sur le noyau ; A représente O, CH2 ou un groupe CH lié à un atome de carbone adjacent par une double liaison ; L représente C4-C8 alkylène ou un groupe de liaison éthylène-oxy correspondant à la formule générale (CH2CH2O)nCH2CH2 (n étant égal à 1 ou à 2); X représente O, S ou méthylène, et m est égal à 0 ou à 1.
