Benzimidazole derivatives of the formula (I): (SEE FIG. I) wherein the ring A is a benzene ring which may optionally contain substitution in addition to the R' group; R1 is hydrogen or an optionally substituted hydrocarbon residue; R2 is a group capable of forming an anion or a group convertible thereinto; X is a direct bond or a spacer having an atomic length of two or less between the phenylene group and the phenyl group; R' is carboxyl, an ester thereof, an amide thereof or a group capable of forming an anion or convertible to an anion; Y is -O-, -S(O)m- or -N(R4)- wherein m is an integer of 0, 1 or 2 and R4 is hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl group; and n is an integer of 1 or 2; and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, have potent angiotensin II antagonistic activity and antihypertensive activity, thus being useful as therapeutic agents for treating circulatory system diseases such as hypertensive diseases, heart diseases (e.g. hypercardia, heart failure, cardiac infarction, etc,), strokes, cerebral apoplexy, nephritis, etc.

I) où le noyau A est un noyau benzénique qui peut facultativement porter un substituant outre le groupe R'; R1 est un atome d'hydrogène ou un résidu hydrocarboné facultativement substitué; R2 est un groupe capable de former un anion ou un groupe convertible en anion; X est une liaison directe ou un séparateur ayant un rayon atomique de deux ou moins entre le groupe phénylène et le groupe phényle; R' est un carboxyle, un ester de l'acide carboxylique correspondant, un amide de l'acide carboxylique correspondant ou un groupe capable de former un anion ou convertible en anion; Y est -O-, -S(O)m- ou -N(R4)- où m est un nombre entier égal à 0, 1 ou 2 et R4 est un atome d'hydrogène ou un groupe alkyle facultativement substitué; et n est un nombre entier égal à 1 ou 2; et les sels pharmaceutiquement acceptables de ces deniers; ces dérivés ont une puissante activité antagoniste de l'angiotensine II et une activité antihypertensive, ce qui les rend donc utiles comme agents thérapeutiques pour traiter les maladies du système circulatoire telles les maladies hypertensives, les cardiopathies (p. ex. hypercardie, insuffisance cardiaque, infarctus cardiaque, etc.), accident cérébro-vasculaire, apoplexie cérébrale, néphrite, etc.
