ABSTRACT Basic benzimidazolyl compounds of general formula: Image wherein R1 is H or a C1-4 hydrocarbon group and Z is a group of general formula: Image wherein R2 and R3 is each, independently, H, a C1-10 hydrocarbon group or a C2-10 carboxyalkyl group are disclosed. These compounds may be prepared by reacting vinylbenzaldehyde with an o-phenylene- diamine. The compounds are readily polymerized to provide linear homo- or copolymers, or cross-linked copolymers having pendant benzimidazolylphenyl groups. These polymers have greater resistance to oxidation and chemical attack than their homo- logues, and are useful as ion exchange resins or chelating agents for metals.
