The invention disclosed relates to novel functionalized benzocyclobutenones (BCBOs), of structural formula I (see formula I) wherein R is NH2, reactive NH2 derivatives including acids, acid chlorides, amides and diazonium salts, OH, CN, NO2, H, I, F Br, Cl, mercapto and deuterium. The BCBOs according to the invention may be reacted with polyols or polyamines to form various polymer composites.
