Abstract Novel pharmaceutically active substances which inhibit the intestinal resorption of cholesterol and which accordingly can be used in the control or prevention of atherosclerosis are described. These active substances, namely benzodiazepines of the general formula Image I wherein R1 signifies (C1-C4)-alkyl, R2 signifies hydrogen or methyl, R3 and R4 each signify halogen and R5 signifies (C3-C9)-alkylamino substituted by at least two hydroxy groups, (C3-C6)- -cycloalkylamino substituted by at least one hydroxy group, glucosamino, galactos- amino, mannosamino, monohydroxy-1-azeti- dinyl, mono- or dihydroxy-1-pyrrolidinyl
