The present invention provides a photochromic compound of the formula (Ia) (see formula Ia) wherein R1 is a C1-C20 alkyl group or an aralkyl group; R2, R3, R4 and R5 each represents H, a C1-C6 alkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, a C1-C5 alkoxy group, a halogen atom, a cyano group, a trichloromethyl group, a trifluoromethyl group or a vitro group; R6 and R7 each represents H, a C1-C6 alkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, a halogen atom, a cyano group or a vitro group; and X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, and a homopolymer of the above compound or a copolymer of the above compound and a vinyl compound represented by the formula CH2 = C (Y) (Z) wherein Y is H or CH3; and Z is a carboxyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, a cyano group, a carbamoyl group, an N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl group, an acetoxy group, a phenyl group or a methylphenyl group.
