Compounds of the formula (I) Image (¦) in which n is 0 to 6, X is halogen, CN, OCN, SCN, C2-C4-alkynyl or CHR5R6 in which R5 and R6 independently of one another are CN, NO2, formyl, (halogen-substituted) (C1-C4- alkyl)carbonyl or (halogen-substituted) (C1-C4- alkoxy)carbonyl or (substituted) phenylcarbonyl, R1 is (halogen-substituted) C1-C4-alkyl, (halogen- substituted) C3-C6-cycloalkyl or (substituted) phenyl, R2 is halogen, CN, NO2, C1-C3-alkyl, C1-C3-alkoxy, C1-C3-haloalkyl, C1-C3-haloalkoxy or R7S(O)m- in which R7 is C1-C3-alkyl and m is zero, one or two, R3 is H, halogen, OH, C1-C3-alkyl, C1-C3-alkoxy, C1-C3- haloalkyl, C1-C3-haloalkoxy or (C1-C3-alkoxy)carbonyl and R4 is H, CN, NO2, halogen, C1-C3-haloalkyl, C1-C3-halo- alkoxy or R8S(O)p- in which R8 is C1-C3-alkyl and p is zero, one or two, are suitable according to the invention as selective herbicides or plant growth regulators. The compounds as such, with the exception of the compounds (I) in which X is C1, are also novel. They can be prepared from 2-benzoyl-1,3-cyclohexanediones via a multiplicity of routes.
