ABSTRACT .beta.-carbolin-3-carboxylic acid derivatives of the general formula Image wherein R1 is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or iso-propyl, and wherein R2 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or iso-propyl, provided that R1 is not methyl, when R2 is hydrogen, are produced by different methods. The compounds are useful in psychopharmaceutical preparations being antagonists of benzodiazepines.
