ABSTRACT Polymerizable monomeric carbamates are disclosed. Polymers comprising recurring units from such carbamates undergo .beta.-elimination in an alkaline environment and are useful in diffusion control layers in diffusion transfer photographic products. These monomers have the formula Image in which R is hydrogen, halogen or lower alkyl; R1 is alkylene, typically ethylene; and Z is a moiety capable of undergoing a .beta.-elimination reaction under alkaline conditions, for example the group -CH2CH2SO2CH3.
