Abstract of the Disclosure An ungelled curable composition comprising: (i) an active hydrogen-containing material, (ii) a beta-hydroxy urethane, and (iii) a cure catalyst. A method of providing n decorative or protective coating for substrates, particularly by electro-deposition is also described. The process comprises: (1) applying to the substrate 8 coating composition comprising: (a) a beta-hydroxy urethane, (b) a cure catalyst, and optionally (c) an active hydrogen- containing material. The beta-hydroxy urethane has been found to be useful as a cross-linking agent for curable compositions, particularly coating compositions. Alternately, the beta-hydroxy urethane can be used as a self-crosslinkable material in providing protective and/or decorative coatings. A clear advantage of the preferred compositions comprising the beta-hydroxy urethane resides in their ability to effect cure at relatively lower temperatures, i.e., below 350°F.
