ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel and versatile process for producing B-lactam compounds of the general formula Image (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl or hydroxyl group, R2 represents R5 hydrogen atom or an ester residue, and R5 represents the group R3 or -CO-R3 in which R3 represents a monovalent organic group, and salts of compounds of formula (1) in which R2 is a hydrogen atom, starting from a compound of the general formula Image (IV) wherein Y represents an amino group which may be protected, or its N-oxide, and some novel B-lactam compounds produced by the aforesaid process.
