Abstract of the disclosure: Substituted .beta.-naphthyl and .beta.-tetrahydronaphthyl- phenyl ethers of the formula Image in which R is an optionally alkyl or halogen (Cl, Br) substituted .beta.-naphthyl or .beta.-tetrahydronaphthyl radical, R1 is H or alkyl, q is 0, 1 or 2 and Z is a carboxylic acid ester, thiocarboxylic acid ester, carbonamide, carbo- hydrazide, thioamide, nitrilo, alcohol, aldehyde, acetal, oxime, carboxylate, carbamate, or sulfonate group, are valuable selective herbicides.
