A beverage container holder (30) to be removably attached to an armrest (18) of a chair (10) includes an arm member (32) and a receptacle (36) on one end of the arm member to receive and support a beverage container in a stable manner. A flexible, generally U-shaped retainer (34) is on the opposite end of the arm member and is configured to engage the armrest to secure the beverage container holder to the armrest. The receptacle includes a base (50), at least one upright wall (52) extending generally about the periphery of the base and a slot (54) provided in the upright wall. The slot extends downwardly from an upper rim (56) of the upright wall to the base and also extends partially across the base.
