An operator for opening and closing movable barriers such as garage doors comprising a pass-point system which is a component of an operating head. The operator also comprises a motor and a transmission assembly connected to the motor for movement of the barrier. The pass-point assembly detects barrier displacements with respect to an intermediate reference point and a controller controls such displacements within a predetermined range of motion. A routine is also included for automatically determining open and close limits of the movable barrier relative to the intermediate reference point. In response to an open or close command the routine causes the barrier to move toward the intermediate reference point, measures the distance traveled and stores the complement. A method for automatically learning the open and close limits of travel of a movable barrier operator is also provided.
