A lip-type fluid seal (10) for a shaft includes a composite sealing lip (26) having an elastomeric portion (32) and a PTFE portion (36). The elastomeric portion (32) includes a lip edge (33) that extends circumferentially continuously to seal the adjacent lip edge (37) of the PTFE portion (36) from any contaminants on the elastomeric side (28) of the seal (10). The PTFE portion (32) has a greater hardness and modulus of elasticity which serves to limit the wear of the elastomeric portion (32) and to induce hydrodynamic surface deformations on the elastomeric lip portion (32) during operation to enhance the exclusion of contaminants. The PTFE lip edge (37) performs well under low temperature and/or low lubricity conditions and its relative hardness protects the elastomeric lip edge from excessive wear.

Cette invention se rapporte à un joint étanche aux fluides du type à lèvre (10), destiné à être monté autour d'un arbre et comprenant une lèvre d'étanchéité composite (26) présentant une partie élastomère (32) et une partie en polytétrafluoroéthylène (PTFE) (36). La partie élastomère (32) présente un bord de lèvre (33) qui s'étend dans le sens circonférentiel en continu, afin de protéger le bord de lèvre adjacent (37) de la partie en PTFE (36) contre tout agent contaminant du côté élastomère (28) du joint d'étanchéité (10). La partie en PTFE (32) possède une plus grande dureté et un module d'élasticité tel qu'il limite l'usure de la partie élastomère (32) et qu'il provoque des déformations de surface hydrodynamiques sur la partie de lèvre élastomère (32) pendant l'utilisation, améliorant ainsi l'exclusion des agents contaminants. Le bord de lèvre en PTFE (37) se comporte bien dans des conditions de température basse et/ou de faible lubrification et sa dureté relative protège le bord de lèvre élastomère de toute usure excessive.
