A tubular food casing comprising a biaxially stretched elongated strip of plastic film having longitudinal edges, said film being curved about a longitudinal axis so that said edges are proximate each other to form a tube, said longitudinal edges being sealed together. Due to its unique properties, the plastic material is preferably a cellulose film from derivatized or non-derivatized cellulose; although, other plastic materials such as polyolefins, halogenated polyolefins and polyamides, such as nylon, can be used. The film is biaxially stretched by at least 10% in a longitudinal direction and at least 10% in a transverse direction, prior to forming the seam, in order to obtain the desired stretch, shrink and strength characteristics. The invention further includes a method for making the tubular food casing.
