ABSTRACT A carrier for bicycles is provided with a ratchet attached to a frame component of the carrier. The ratchet is formed by a generally U-shaped body in which is rotatably supported a slotted reel. A toothed ratchet wheel at one end of the rotatable reel is provided with inclined teeth and a pawl releasably engaging said teeth is spring biased into engagement with the teeth. The pawl is pivotally attached to one side of the U-shaped body and permits rotation of the reel in one direction while preventing rotation in the opposite direction. The end of the reel opposite the toothed wheel is provided with means for manually ro- tating the reel. A strap provided at its free end with a hook for engaging a portion of a motor vehicle is threaded through the slot so that it is tensioned by rotation of the reel.
