A simple automatic operating device intended to improve the operation of power assisted bicycles. The device consists of a small free turning sprocket (chain strain sensing) mounted near one end of a short moveable arm. The other end of the moveable arm pivots on a frame mounted bracket attached to the bicycle frame mid-way between the crank arm sprocket and the rear wheel sprocket. A spring holds the arm up, which holds the attached sprocket against the underside of the upper length of a slightly long bicycle drive chain. Pedal force, in excess of that required to ride on the level, increases the chain tension, forcing the sensing sprocket and arm downward. In one application of the device, movement of the arm can be used to operate a three range variable resistor to automatically control current flow to and from an electric motor-generator of a power assisted bicycle. In a second application, downward movement of the chain strain sensing sprocket arm can be used to automatically control the throttle mechanism of an internal combustion bicycle engine used for power assist.
