17 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bicycle gear shift unit (10) permits a bicycle rider to effect a gear change without releasing the bicycle handlebars or brake handle. The shift unit (10) includes a stationary base (42, 42', 42") affixed to the handlebars (HB) and a rotatable base (40, 40'). A clutch mechanism (224) allows the rider to return his hand to a selected position after changing gears.
