A bi-directional optical amplifier for amplifying signals in a bi-directional transmission line comprising two line sections each having separate carriers for two direction transmission. The amplifier includes an active element having means for amplifying the signals and an active optical fibre travelled in both directions by the signals to be amplified. The active element is connected between a pair of optical circulators such that, for both transmission directions, signals to be amplified in one of the two line sections pass through the active element through one of the optical circulators and, after being amplified, exit through the other optical circulator thereby passing onto the other line section.
