A bidiretional optical communication system employing a living line and a standby line. One of a master unit and a slave unit has a photoswitch for switching between the living line and the standby line and the other has a photocoupler for collecting the living line and the standby line. When deterioration in communication state of the living line is detected on the side having the photoswitch, the photoswitch on that side is switched to use the standby line.

L'une parmi une unité maître et une unité esclave a un commutateur photoélectrique pour commuter entre la ligne active et la ligne en attente et l~autre a un coupleur photoélectrique pour regrouper la ligne active et la ligne en attente. Lorsqu~une détérioration dans l~état de communication de la ligne active est détectée sur le côté ayant le commutateur photoélectrique, le commutateur photoélectrique sur ce côté est commuté pour utiliser la ligne en attente.
