In the agricultural industry, and more specifically the livestock industry, there are times when restraint of the animal is required, whether for administering medication or for physical inspection. It is imperative to both the animal and the handlers that this procedure be conducted with the minimum amount of stress an the animal. This stress includes both mental and physical. Given these stressed conditions, simple situations can become fatal for the panic stricken animal. In conventional head gate assemblies, many problems exist that either place the animal in mortal danger, or increase the stress level in the animal so as to create further problems, thus endangering both the animal and the handlers. The patent applicatian outlined herein presents a novel and ingenious solution to problems commonly encountered with current head gate assemblies. In employing a bifold head gate mechanism in where the gate comes laterally from the side of the animal while maintaining its geometric relationship to the animal and the assembly, significant improvements are realized. Furthermore, with a positive self-locking mechanism, once the animal is secured it can be maintained in the head gate assembly indefinitely. This restraint system additionally allows for panels to be created in the head gate assembly so as to present greater access to the neck area of the animal while providing maximum safety for the personnel. Of serious consideration is the ability of the handlers to reduce the stress placed on the animal. This form of animal ergonomics is realized by the ability of the handlers to operate the head gate assembly from a multiplicity of locations from front to side to rear. This multiple operating location reduces the stress experienced by the animal, thereby increasing the safety of the animal while in he head gate, and too the safety of the handlers. The improvements herein described make the bifold head gate assembly considerably more favourable to all involved in restraining animals.
