Disclosed are a polyaddition compound containing uretdione and carboxyl groups and a process for preparing the polyaddition compound. The polyaddition compound has a melting point of 40-200°C, a free NCO content of 0-5% by weight, an NCO functionality of at least 1.5, a number- average molar mass of 1,000-10,000 and is produced by reacting A) a polyisocyanate having a uretdione group, B) a hydroxycarboxylic acid or mercaptocarboxylic acid and at least one of the following C)-F): C) a monofunctional compound reactive with an NCO group, D) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyol, E) a polyol containing a functional group, and F) an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyamine. The polyaddition compound is useful as a starting component for polyurethane plastics, especially as a crosslinker for polyurethane powder coating material which also comprise a hydroxyl-containing polymer.
