ABSTRACT An improved neutral position collar having a positive neutral position retaining detent for providing a definite "feel" to the neutral position as the transmission is shifted in either of the two possible directions. The neutral position collar is bifurcated to improve the manufac- turability and the cost of the neutral position collar. The bifurcation and the attendant enhanced manufacturability improve the costs of using the neutral position collar as a variable length spacer which adapts selectable combinations of forward and reverse gears to a standard length shaft and a standard size transmission/transaxle housing.
