An aluminum billet which can discharge air in an air pocket formed in the container near its front end to the rear of the container, and a method of manufacturing such a billet. The billet has on its outer periphery grooves extending continuously from one to the other end thereof. Such a billet is manufactured using a continuous casting machine having a casting die having on its inner surface a plurality of ribs for forming the grooves in the outer periphery of the billet. Such a billet may also be manufactured by providing on an anvil of a press a billet guide means and a die having on its inner surface convex blades, and pushing a billet through the guide means and then through the die.
