The presently disclosed invention relates to a phenolic binder comprising a premix of a urea modified phenol--formaldehyde resole resin, a curing agent, and an additive selected from the group consisting of ammonium lignosulfonate, melamine and a melamine derivative. A method for reducing gaseous emissions in the manufacture of fibrous insulation materials is also dis-closed.
