Disclosed is a binder for magnetic recording media. The binder comprises a sulfobetaine-containing resin. The resin has a good affinity for magnetic powders. Therefore, by using the resin as a binder, good dispersion of superfine magnetic powders or large amount of magnetization is attained. The sulfobetaine- containing resin is for example polyurethane resin, polyester resin, vinyl chloride copolymer, vinylidene chloride copolymer, acrylic resin, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer or styrene- butadiene copolymer.
