ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Bio-mass materials, including wood, agricultural and municipal wastes, are partially combusted in a fixed bed reactor in which the bio- mass fuel and the product gas move downwardly cocurrently and in which the reactor has an annular reaction zone of decreasing cross-sectional area as the bio-mass fuel moves downwardly. A conical gas plenum zone, distinct from the reaction zone, is provided to define the annular reaction zone and the product gas collected in such plenum chamber is withdrawn through withdrawal lines. The conical gas plenum chamber includes a centrally disposed, hollow conical member, which is open at its base and closed at its apex. Means communicating directly with the gas plenum chamber are pro- vided for the withdrawal of product gases. The apparatus is operated to provide sub-stoichiometric reaction conditions to produce low BTU product gases which may be used in a variety of ways.
