Disclosed are semi-crystalline depsipeptide polymers and copolymers particularly suitable for use in fabricating bioabsorbable medical implant devices such as sutures or clips and obtained through ring-opening polymerization of 3-substituted- 2,5-morpholinediones of the formula: Image (wherein R is alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, aryl, arylalkyl, alkylaryl, alkylarylalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, alkylsulfinylalkyl, alkylsulfonylalkyl, cyanoalkyl or aminocarbonylalkyl). The 3- substituted-2,5-morpholinediones are prepared by reacting a naturally occurring alpha-amino acid H2N-CH(R)-COOH with an alpha- halo acid chloride X-CH2CO-X in inert solvent in the presence of an acid acceptor.
