ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A bone fixation device is disclosed. The device comprises an absorbable homopolymer of l-lactide or dl-lactide, or a copolymer of l-lactide, and a reinforcement material. The reinforcement material can be a particulate filler of hydroxyapatite or a plurality of fibers chosen from alumina, poly(p-phenylene terephthalimide), polyethylene terephthalate, and ultra high modulus polythene. These materials have the advantage that, apart from being bioabsorbable, they also show strength properties similar to normal bone, which is not the case with the stainless steel devices currently used.
