The present invention is based on the discovery that stents can be coated with biodegradable, bioactive polymers that promote endogenous healing processes at a site of stent implantation. The polymers biodegrade over time, releasing agents which establish or re-establish the natural healing process in an artery. Preferably, the stent is implanted at the time an artery is damaged, such at the time of angioplasty to protect the damaged artery against deleterious blood-borne factors that initiate proliferation of smooth muscle cells.

L'invention repose sur la découverte suivante : les endoprothèses vasculaires peuvent être enduites de polymères bioactifs, biodégradables qui favorisent la cicatrisation endogène au point d'implantation. Les polymères se dégradent avec le temps, libérant des agents qui déclenchent ou relancent le processus de cicatrisation naturel dans une artère. De préférence, on implante l'endoprothèse vasculaire dès l'apparition de la lésion dans l'artère, tel qu'au moment de pratiquer une angioplastie afin de protéger l'artère lésée contre les facteurs nuisibles à diffusion hématogène qui sont à l'origine de la prolifération des cellules du muscle lisse.
