ABSTRACT Biocidally active surface coating compositions having excellent resistance to attack by algae, fungi and other microorganisms and high activity against a deposition of biota. The surface coatings exhibit antimicrobial activity against a broad range of micro-organisms when bonded to a variety of surfaces. The active chemical is not removed from surfaces by repeated washing with water or submerging the surfaces in water for extended periods of time and its antimicrobial activity could not be attributed to a slow release of the active ingredient, but rather to an active non-leachable surface. The active compounds in monomeric forms having structural formulas as follows: Image and/or Image wherein R1, R2 and R3 each represent an unsubstituted or a substituted alkyl or hydroxyalkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or modification of those groups; whereas Y represents hydrogen, an unsubstituted or a substituted alkyl group having up to 10 carbon atoms, or modification of this group, and wherein X- represents an anionic group, for example Cl-, Br-, I-, OH-, HSO4- etc.
